Istanbul, Turkey, 18 October 2024 - The Philippine Consulate General in Istanbul, in partnership with the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) successfully held a screening of the documentary "HUGO: A Hidden Past Revealed", directed by Mr. Rhadem Musawah, at the Grand Pera AVM in Istiklal, a historic and famous avenue in Istanbul Türkiye. The event marked the first time a Philippine documentary was presented to the Turkish audience and the general public in Istanbul.
The screening was attended by over 70 guests, including members of the Consular Corps, the Filipino community in Istanbul, Turkish nationals, and other foreign attendees. The documentary, which focuses on the discovery of the bul-ul (the rice god) — one of the Philippines’ most significant cultural artifacts — received overwhelmingly positive feedback. Viewers praised the film for its educational value and its vivid portrayal of the rich cultural heritage and stunning landscapes of the Cordillera Region.
In addition to the documentary, the Consulate introduced Philippine coffee to the audience for the first time, in partnership with De Leon’s Coffee, a Latin-American coffee company-based in Istanbul. Guests enjoyed freshly brewed coffee from Sagada, Mountain Province, and Amadeo, Cavite, paired with traditional Filipino kakanin such as biko, palitaw, and sapin-sapin. Many attendees remarked that they were pleasantly surprised to discover the high quality of Philippine coffee.
This documentary screening forms part of the year-long celebration of the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Türkiye, as well as the 2024 Indigenous Peoples Month celebration.
